The technology used at Neuronano AB for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an electrode-cluster technology using a biodegradable carrier for implantation. The carrier, often made from gelatin, provides a reliable and robust vehicle for advancing the extremely thin electrodes to the target area. After reaching the target, the vehicle dissolves, leaving the electrode cluster covering the target area. Finally, an optimal stimulation pattern is selected to obtain maximal symptom relief and minimal side effects.
- The fine art is how precise we can be with this new technology. While covering the target area, each electrode can be controlled individually, meaning that regions throughout the target area can be stimulated selectively. This, in turn, means that areas providing alleviation of Parkinson’s symptoms can be addressed with stimulation while simultaneously avoiding stimulation in areas creating side effects, Niclas Lindqvist, Researcher at Neuronano AB, explains.
